WHAT DOES THIS MEAN
TO ESSEX AREA?

The $ 15. registration subsidy is gone.

If you meet in a school, you will have to pay your own school rental fees.

3. Amy’s salary will no longer be paid by United Way funds.

4. Kim’s salary will no longer by paid by United Way funds.

5. If you put an advertisement in your local newspaper for your group registration, you will have to pay for it.

6. The Essex office will have to close.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND that we knew that this would eventually happen. Other United Way agencies have already switched to only funding families in crisis, and with the economy, that was bound to happen soon. We are very grateful to United Way for funding us as long as they have and we understand their position.

The next month or so will be extremely stressful for the Area Service Team as we lay out a new plan to service out Area. We cannot expect Edna to carry on as in the past. That is a main worry for us. We will gladly accept any ideas from you.

Text Box: ATTENTION ALL SCOUTING FRIENDS!

The following is a letter sent to all Group Commissioners on Tuesday of this week by Grant Ferron, our Council Commissioner . . . .

Greetings:
I am writing to provide you an update as to our submission for funding to the United Way of Windsor and Essex County. As you know, the United Way’s campaigns have been suffering the effects of the economy and the funding need has greatly outmatched the United Way capacity. Over the last several months, the United Way has reviewed 83 requests of which 25 were allocated funding. Regrettably, Scouts Canada did not make the final list of recipients, as United Way ran out of funds. I met with the United Way and would like to commend them on their efforts and the objectivity of the process. Both UW volunteers and staff have been faced with very difficult decisions and notifying long-term partnering agencies has not been easy.
While there is no immediate affect to our operations in the Windsor and Essex Areas, and to help, the United Way has offered some transitional support. However, the UW decision will eventually impact a number of projects and I would like to assure you that we will be as consultative as possible in the next few weeks. If you have Text Box: DID YOU HELP?
We’d like to thank the Beaveree, 4th Leamington, Comber and Essex Public School—Mrs. Peleshok’s class. for saving the Koolaid packages for us this month. We’re on a roll! Hopefully over the summer, we’ll be able to amass a great quantity.
We are collecting Koolaid and Delmonte drink pouches, Christie snack pack pouches and Nature’s Way pouches. These will be recycled by a company that will pay 2 cents per pouch. Pam Emery of Emeryville has agreed to co-ordinate the packaging and shipping of the pouches to the company involved. ALL PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED TO CAMP CEDARWIN to keep costs down. The Group Commissioners have endorsed this project so—START RECYCLING!!
You are asked to bring the pouches to your meetings before the Group Commissioners’ meeting. The Group Commissioner will bring them to the Group Commissioners’ meeting and Pam will collect them there.

ARE YOU COMING BACK?
This is the time when we need a commitment from the Scouters in our group as to whether they are planning on registering for the upcoming year. We need to know what we will need to recruit. Now, while we have much parent involvement in our camps and activities, would be a great time to approach these same people as to our needs for leadership in the fall.

Text Box: THANK YOU
We have had two very successful spring events in May. The Beavereee was probably one of the coldest, windiest day in May but everyone had a great time. Thanks to Belle River and Wheatley Scouters for a fine job of planning the day.
The Cuboree the following weekend was also a great success with weather that co-operated—a little damp Friday night—but gorgeous on Saturday and Sunday. Everyone enjoyed Shaymus the storyteller and his pioneer stories. Thanks to Ron Wijngaarden and Robert Boose for great planning to celebrate 100 years of Scouting!

NEWS FLASH!
Kim McLaughlin has accepted a full-time position with Community Living-Essex County starting June 1st. We wish her well in her new career choice!
